Sprouts Unlimited Inc. E. coli Lawyer Update: Clover Sprouts Recalled Due to E. coli O103 Risks.
A recall on clover sprouts was announced by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on December 27, 2019. The recall involved the company Sprouts Unlimited of Marion IA, which recalled their 4 oz. packages of clover sprouts after it was discovered that the products may have been contaminated by Escherichia coli O103 bacteria. The batches of contaminated sprouts were distributed to Hy Vee Food stores, Fareway Food Stores and Jimmy John’s restaurants in Iowa.
Sprouts Unlimited Inc. began the recall of their sprout products after they were notified by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals in Des Moines, IA, about a cluster of E. coli O103 cases linked to the clover sprouts. According to Health Department officials, the E. coli O103 illnesses reported were epidemiologically linked to clover sprouts from Sprouts Unlimited Inc. The source of the contamination has not been discovered as of yet but an investigation and further test are currently underway to determine it.

The recalled sprout products sold by retailers were packaged in pint containers which have a blue Sprouts Unlimited Inc. label on the lid. The UPC 7 32684 00013 6 can be found stamped at the bottom right side of the label. The company has advised consumers who purchased the recalled products to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Restaurants have also been notified to discontinue the use of the contaminated products immediately.
The FDA is advising consumers who might be experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea which can at times be bloody, and abdominal pain to contact a medical health care provider as soon as they are able to. Young children, the elderly and those with weak immune symptoms should avoid taking anti-biotics unless instructed to by a health care provider as E. coli can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). In the recent E. coli O157: H7 outbreak linked to Romaine Lettucemore than 130 cases were reported and over half of them required hospitalization.
