Salmonella Lawyer Update: Salmonella Outbreak Linked Raw Frozen Breaded Stuffed Chicken.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on June 2, 2021, their investigation of a new outbreak linked to raw frozen breaded stuffed chicken products. Although the outbreak was announced fairly recently the reports of cases linked to it were received by health department officials on dates ranging from February 21, 2021, to May 7, 2021. At the time of the announcement of the outbreak, the CDC reported that seventeen cases of salmonella infections have been linked to the outbreak strain.
In their report of the investigation on the salmonella outbreak, the CDC stated that other than the raw frozen breaded stuffed chicken products, that seem to be the potential source of the outbreak, not much is known at this time. Of the seventeen cases reported so far, eight required hospitalizations. Health Department Officials were able to reach out to thirteen of the seventeen affected people and they have all stated that they had eaten breaded stuffed chicken products. After speaking with the reported cases health officials discovered that the affected people purchased multiple brands of the chicken products from multiple locations.
On the same day as the CDC report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a health alert regarding the Frozen Raw Breaded Stuffed Chicken. According to the FSIS, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture collected five samples of frozen breaded stuffed chicken products from retail stores where the affected people shopped. After testing the samples they discovered that two of the samples of Kirkwood’s Chicken Cordon Bleu tested positive for the outbreak strain. At this time there is no recall on the potentially contaminated products but the FSIS is urging consumers to be alert of products labeled "chicken cordon bleu", chicken with “broccoli and cheese”, or "chicken Kiev".
Salmonella bacteria multiply at an alarming rate causing symptoms to manifest within a few hours after ingesting the contaminated product. In most cases a person can begin feeling ill within 6 to 72 hours after exposure, normally the symptoms that follow are diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, gastroenteritis is typically characterized by fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Ron Simon, a National Salmonella Lawyer, stated:
“A Salmonella infection is usually diagnosed by a positive culture from a stool sample of the infected person. In more severe illnesses, Salmonella bacteria can sometimes be detected in a contaminated person’s blood or urine. Severe cases of salmonella can lead to long-term irritable bowel disease, usually referred to as IBS, or other severe long-term illnesses.”
