Thomson International, Inc. Salmonella Lawyer Update: Red Onion Salmonella Lawyer Prepares Lawsuit as Nearly 500 cases linked to Salmonella Newport Outbreak are Identified in the U.S. and Canada
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on July 31, 2020, their investigation on a recent multistate Salmonella Newportoutbreak linked to red onions. The FDA’s traceback investigation was able to link to the contaminated onion products to Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield, CA. Although the traceback investigation linked the red onions sold by Thomson International, Inc. to the outbreak, out of an abundance of caution the company informed the FDA that they will be recalling all varieties of onions that could have come in contact with potentially contaminated red onions, due to the risk of cross-contamination.
The FDA has announced that it is currently working along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)to investigate the still growing multistate Salmonella Newport outbreak. The outbreak has already affected close to 500 people in both the United States and Canada. As of July 31, 2020, the CDC announced that a total of 396 cases have been reported from 34 states so far. No deaths have been linked to the outbreak but a total of 59 people have required hospitalization. The States affected by the outbreak are AK (6), AZ (14), CA (49), CO (10), FL (3), ID (5), IL (10), IN (2), IA (15), KS (1), KY (1), ME (4), MD (1), MI (23), MN (10), MO (6), MT (33), NE (5), NV (5), NY (4), NC (3), ND (5), OH (7), OR (71), PA (2), SC (1), SD (11), TN (5), TX (1), UT (61), VA (4), WA (2), WI (5), and WY (11).
No recall has been officially been announced yet, but the FDA is advising consumers to refrain from purchasing onions from Thomson International, Inc. Restaurants and retail stores have also been advised to avoid selling and serving the contaminated onion products. Consumers who have onions in their household and believe they are from Thomson International, Inc. should dispose of them in an appropriate manner.
People who have consumed red onions from Thomson International, Inc. should be cautious of symptoms of salmonella such as high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Those who are experiencing symptoms of salmonella should consider contacting a medical health care provider as soon as possible. Ron Simon, a National Salmonella Lawyer, stated:
“The infectious dose of Salmonella is very small, and can be as small as 15-20 cells. These bacteria subsequently multiply at an alarming rate, causing the manifestation of symptoms.”
