Pero Family Farms, LLC. Listeria Lawyer Update: Butternut Squash Products Recalled Due to Listeria Concerns.
A recall was issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) affecting butternut squash cubes, chunks, and spiral products sold by Pero Family Farms Food Company, LLC. The recall was issued by the FDA on January 19th, 2021, after the Pero Family Company informed them of the potential listeria monocytogenes contamination, a few days after the company announced their voluntary recall. The potential contamination was discovered by Race West Company, a supplier of butternut squash to Pero Family Company, although no specific source of the contamination has been discovered yet an investigation has been started to find the cause of the contamination.
Pero Family Farms, LLC. has announced that it will temporarily halt the production of the butternut squash products while all parties investigate the source of the contamination. The potentially contaminated products were distributed from January 2, 2021, to January 11, 2021, to wholesalers and retail food stores in flexible clear plastic containers with labeling on the top and bottom of the container or in a clear plastic bag. The products were distributed under the Pero Family Farms label in Louisiana, Florida, Texas, New York, Maine, Georgia, Ohio, Virginia, Alabama, Virginia, and Missouri.
The FDA is urging all consumers who might have purchased the contaminated products to refrain from eating them and return them to the place of purchase. The recalled products can be distinguished by the run number code and use-by date, which can be found on the front bottom right-hand corner of the tray package or on the package. According to the FDA, no reports of illness have been linked to the butternut squash products at the time of the recall, and a full list of the affected products can be found on the FDA recall page.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious infection called listeriosis, which if not treated properly can spread to the nervous system and cause symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions. Those at higher risk of contracting listeriosis are the elderly, newborns, pregnant women, and adults with weakened immune systems. Ron Simon, a National Listeria Lawyer, stated:
“Generally, an individual gets listeriosis by eating food contaminated with Listeria. Pregnant women are at high risk of miscarriages or stillbirths, and babies can be born with listeriosis if their mothers eat contaminated food during pregnancy. Persons at risk can prevent Listeria infection by avoiding certain high-risk foods and by handling food properly.”
