Jule’s Foods Salmonella Lawyer Update: FDA Announces Salmonella Outbreak linked to Jule’s Foods Products
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a multi-state Salmonella Duisburg outbreak linked to vegan or plant-based cheese alternative products sold by Jule’s Foods. In the outbreak report, the FDA stated that the company Jule’s Foods have also issued a voluntary recall on multiple products containing cashews. The recall was issued on April 22, 2021, after samples of the cashew products were tested by the California Department of Public Health and it was discovered that the products contained the presence of salmonella. At this time five cases of Salmonella Duisburg have been linked to the recalled products, with at least two of them requiring hospitalization.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that the strain of salmonella linked to this outbreak is a very rare serotype. According to the CDC, of the five people that were linked to the salmonella outbreak three reported eating Jule’s Truffle Cashew Brie before becoming ill, at this time that is the only common product identified between the people affected by the outbreak. The California Department of Public Health and Tennessee Department of Health have also assisted with the investigation by collecting samples of the recalled products from various retail locations. Although the presence of salmonella has been found in the samples collected by health department officials, additional analysis are being made to determine if the salmonella found matches the outbreak strain.
The recalled Jule’s Foods products were sold through the company’s online store and select retail locations in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas. Both the FDA and CDC are advising consumers to refrain from eating, or purchasing any of the recalled Jule’s Foods products. Retail stores and restaurants have also been advised against selling or serving the recalled cashew products until more information on the outbreak is known. Consumers who still have the products should dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase as soon as they are able to. Foods contaminated with salmonella bacterium look, smell, and taste the same as any other but can cause an infection known as salmonellosis. A person infected with salmonellosis normally experiences symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated product. Ron Simon, a National Salmonella Lawyer, stated:
“A Salmonella infection is usually diagnosed by a positive culture from a stool sample of the infected person. In more severe illnesses, Salmonella bacteria can sometimes be detected in a contaminated person’s blood or urine. Those who have become ill should seek medical attention and request a stool culture. If you test positive, the County Health Agency will call to interview you.”
