Fresh Basil Cyclospora Lawyer: Siga Logistics de RL de CV Fresh Basil Recall.
On July 25 th , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced their ongoing investigation on a multistate outbreak of cyclospora linked to fresh basil imported from Mexico.
The FDA requested a voluntary recall on Fresh Basil exported to the United States by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico. The recall was due to the fact that the FDA’s trace back investigation indicated that the fresh basil from Siga Logistics de RL de CV was available at points of sale where consumers became ill.
According to the FDA the states with cases of people affected are CT, FL, GA, IA, MA, MN, NY, OH, RI, SC, and WI. 132 people have already been affected by this outbreak, four of which have been hospitalized as of July 9 th . No deaths have been reported.
The FDA has decided to work along with its Mexican food safety regulatory counterparts to better define the cause and source of this cyclospora outbreak. For now the FDA has increased import screening on basil and will continue to investigate the cause and source of the outbreak as well as the distribution of products.
The FDA has advised consumers to avoid buying, eating, or serving any fresh basil exported by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico. If a consumer is uncertain on whether the basil in their home is from this company, they should avoid consuming the basil and dispose of it as soon as possible. REcent outbreaks, also linked to imported produce, include the 2018 Del Monte Cyclospora Outbreak that sickened over 250 people and forced Del Monte to recall vegetable trays served in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, and the 2018 McDonald’s Cyclospora Outbreakthat forced McDonald’s to voluntarily recall contaminated salads sold at more than 3000 locations.

Testing can be performed via ova and parasite examination, using molecular approaches, or via a gastrointestinal pathogen panel evaluation.”
