More than 500 people ill from e. coli contamination at zipline attraction
A significant number of visitors at a zipline attraction in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, became ill after drinking water served in coolers between mid-June and early July. 548 people reported becoming sick with gastrointestinal illnesses. Tests conducted by the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed the presence of e. coli in the water at Climb Works Zip Line Canopy Tour.
Health officials believe the actual number of people who became ill is much higher and will increase as more people seek medical attention. The Department of Health sent surveys to people who had reserved tours at the zipline attraction. Less than half responded to the survey and 548 of those responding indicated they had become ill after visiting the Gatlinburg facility and drinking the water served in coolers there. Several were bedridden with their symptoms.
The attraction was closed temporarily to sanitize and add more filtration to the water wells. A lab in Nashville is continuing to test water samples taken from the coolers. E. coli has been confirmed as the source of the reported illnesses.
Many of the visitors reported that their vacations had been ruined by the illnesses. Some had very long drives home while dealing with gastrointestinal symptoms among their family members.
