Chipotle Norovirus Update: Eleven Food Poisoning Cases Linked to a Chipotle in Colorado. A recent investigation was announced by The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) involving a Chipotle restaurant in AURORA, Colorado. The investigation was announced on May 14, 2021, a few days after Tri-County Health began receiving reports of people who became ill after eating at the Chipotle location. A total of eleven people reported eating at the same location and becoming ill, five of the people were members of a local high school tennis team who all experienced the same symptoms after eating food from the Chipotle restaurant. Of the eleven people who said they became ill at least eight have been identified as patrons and employees. One of the people who became ill after eating food from the Chipotle restaurant, Kristi Ryan, stated that after her husband brought the food from Chipotle home and they ate it the entire family except her husband became ill within 36 hours. Kristi also emphasized that she tried to contact the restaurant multiple times to inform them of what happened to her family but was met with dis-concern by the staff. She also tried to contact corporate who only directed her to their website without any actual assistance. The CDPHE has stated that they are partnering with the Tri-County Health Department to investigate the suspected foodborne outbreak at the Chipotle located at 6710 S Cornerstar Way. Health Department Officials said “The investigation is ongoing, and at this time, the cause of the illness has not been identified. Symptoms appear to be consistent with viral gastroenteritis, which is often caused by norovirus.” The Health Department will continue working closely with the restaurant, which has implemented disease control measures. A spoke person for Chipotle stated “The health and safety of our employees and guests is our greatest priority. We have reached out to the two families that dined at our Aurora restaurant on South Cornerstar and at this time, we have not received any other guest complaints regarding this matter.” People infected with Norovirus usually experience symptoms within 24 to 48 hours of exposure. The Symptoms normally include stomach cramps, fever, watery diarrhea, chills, headache, fatigue, and muscle soreness, at times they can last up to 60 hours and alleviate on their own. Ron Simon, a National Norovirus Lawyer, stated: “Norovirus is highly contagious and can survive on items an infected person may handle for days or even weeks, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings, the food you handle, and the presence of any infected persons.
