Avanti Frozen Foods Salmonella Lawyer Update: Shrimp Products Linked to Salmonella Outbreak.
A recall was announced on June 25, 2021, affecting frozen cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp, sold and distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods. The recall was followed by the announcement of a new salmonella outbreak potentially linked to the recalled shrimp products. The link between the shrimp products and the outbreak was identified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), after having discovered the presence of salmonella in a prior shipment of shrimps imported by Avanti Frozen Foods. At this time six cases have been linked to the salmonella outbreak associated with frozen cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp.
Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd distributed the contaminated shrimp products nationwide from late December 2020 to late February 2021. The company has recalled multiple brand names believed to be linked to the outbreak. Some of the brands included in the recall were Censea, Chicken of the Sea, CWNO, Hannaford, Honest Catch, Meijer, Open Acres, and Waterfront Bistro. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have urged people who have any of the brands of shrimp listed in the recall, to dispose of them as soon as possible or return them to the place of purchase.
The CDC has stated that the six cases linked to the outbreak thus far are adults from Nevada and Arizona. According to the report on the outbreak at least 2 of them required hospitalization after becoming ill. Although the number of reported cases thus far is six the CDC speculates that the true number of sick people linked to the outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.
Salmonella symptoms can appear as early as 6 to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated product, in some cases however the incubation period can be as long as seven to twelve days. Commonly people affected with salmonella experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, urinary tract infections, nausea, headaches, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, and dehydration. Ron Simon, a National Salmonella Lawyer, stated:
“Severe gastroenteritis may require hospitalization. In these patients, the Salmonella infection can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and into parts of the body, such as joints. Under these circumstances, the infection can cause ongoing illness and even death unless the patient is treated properly with antibiotics.”
