Arby’s Norovirus Lawyer Update: Arby’s Norovirus Outbreak Linked to 94 Reported Cases Seems to be Over. Two months have now passed since the norovirus outbreak which affected almost 100 people was linked to the Arby’s restaurant in Springfield, Illinois. Although the outbreak seems to be over - considering the amount of time that has passed since the last update - many people are still recovering from the side effects of eating at the restaurant in late February 2021. The number of cases linked to the restaurant rose to 94 in less than four weeks with many of the affected customers calling the Sangamon County Department of Public Health to report symptoms such as uncontrollable diarrhea or vomiting after eating at the Arby’s location linked to the outbreak.
During the time of the outbreak, the Sangamon County Department of Public Health decided to minimize the potential for new cases by closing the restaurant. They had to do so two times. The first time was on February 23rd, 2021, after health department officials began receiving a large number of complaints from people who had eaten at the restaurant and fallen ill shortly after. After closing the restaurant, the health department began their invention and discovered that the cause of the illnesses was norovirus. Health officials recommended Arby's undergo through deep cleaning and that the employees to go through employee training before being allowed to reopen.
Sangamon County Department of Public Health allowed the Arby’s location to reopen.
Then, less than two weeks later health department officials began receiving even more complaints of people becoming ill after eating at the same Arby’s. In the second wave of complaints the number of cases more than doubled, almost reaching one hundred victims. Another investigation was launched.
Between the two investigations, multiple violations were discovered, including unproperly refrigerated food, to poor food handling procedures. The restaurant was allowed to reopen less than a week after tge second closure, after all the issues had been corrected.
Many of the 94 reported cases may have fully recovered but some of those affected had to seek out medical treatment and could, potentially, still be experiencing secondary symptoms after the infection. People who become ill with norovirus illness feel extremely ill and have severe vomiting and/or diarrhea many times a day. According to Ron Simon, a National Norovirus Lawyer representing people affected by the Arby’s norovirus outbreak:
“While most of these symptoms are not life-threatening, victims must be aware of dehydration. Diarrhea and vomiting result in dramatic fluid loss, which quickly becomes dangerous, especially for young children and the elderly. In rare cases, long-term gastroenteritis can result.”
